What happened: New safeguards take effect
From Thursday 8 January 2026, technology companies operating in the United Kingdom must actively block unsolicited nude images — including on social media sites and dating apps — under new online safety regulations. This change, enacted as part of the Online Safety Act 2023, designates the proactive prevention of such content as a legal requirement rather than a reactive measure, putting responsibility on tech firms to detect and stop explicit images before users see them.
These new duties stem from concerns about “cyberflashing” — the unwanted sending of sexual images — which has been a criminal offence in England and Wales since January 2024, carrying penalties of up to two years in prison.
The UK government has framed this initiative as a response to surveys indicating that around one in three teenage girls report having received unsolicited sexual images online, a statistic it says underscores the scale of the problem.
Regulator Ofcom will oversee compliance, with companies potentially facing substantial fines — up to 10 % of global revenue — or even being blocked within the UK if they fail to meet the new standards.
