  • HCLTech has agreed to acquire Hewlett Packard Enterprise’s telecom solutions business for $160 million.
  • The deal strengthens HCLTech’s push into AI-driven telecom and enterprise network services.

What happened: HCLTech expands telecom portfolio with targeted acquisition

Indian IT services firm HCLTech has agreed to acquire Hewlett Packard Enterprise’s (HPE) telecom solutions business in a deal valued at $160 million. The transaction is intended to accelerate HCLTech’s growth in telecom software, network services and AI-enabled offerings for communications service providers worldwide.

The acquired unit focuses on telecom service orchestration, assurance and network automation, supporting operators as they modernise networks and transition towards cloud-native and AI-driven architectures. HCLTech said the business has a strong presence among tier-one telecom operators and brings long-standing customer relationships, domain expertise and specialised engineering talent.

As part of the deal, HCLTech will also take on around 500 skilled employees from the HPE telecom unit. The acquisition is expected to close later this year, subject to customary regulatory approvals and closing conditions. HPE will continue to collaborate with HCLTech as a strategic partner, particularly around infrastructure and hybrid cloud deployments.

HCLTech executives said the acquisition aligns with the company’s broader strategy to deepen its role in telecom digital transformation, covering areas such as 5G, network automation, artificial intelligence and data-driven operations. The firm has increasingly focused on industry-specific platforms rather than generic IT services, with telecom identified as a key vertical for growth.

Why it’s important

The deal reflects ongoing consolidation in the telecom technology ecosystem as service providers seek more integrated, software-led solutions. Operators face mounting pressure to reduce costs, improve service quality and monetise investments in 5G and future network technologies. AI-enabled automation and orchestration have therefore become central to their strategies.

By acquiring HPE’s telecom solutions business, HCLTech gains immediate scale and credibility in a specialised market segment. Instead of building capabilities organically over many years, the company can now accelerate product development and expand its addressable market among global operators.

For HPE, the divestment underscores a continued focus on core infrastructure, cloud and enterprise platforms, while relying on partners to take specialised software offerings forward. Such moves are becoming more common as large technology vendors streamline portfolios and concentrate resources.

More broadly, the transaction highlights India’s growing influence in the global telecom services market. Indian IT firms increasingly play a central role in designing, operating and automating networks worldwide. As AI becomes embedded across telecom operations, competition among technology providers to offer end-to-end, intelligent solutions is likely to intensify.
