    • The new exchange aims to improve network resilience and integrate West Africa into global internet infrastructures.
    • The new site will be near six submarine cable landing stations, enhancing international connectivity for the region.

What happened: LINX and Digital Realty launch new IXP in Accra, Ghana

The London Internet Exchange (LINX) has expanded its partnership with Digital Realty to launch a new Internet Exchange Point (IXP) in Accra, Ghana. The facility, named LINX Accra, will provide a crucial interconnection fabric, enabling high-speed, low-latency connections for network operators and service providers. This marks LINX’s third African IXP, following its previous launches in Nairobi and Mombasa.

Digital Realty’s upcoming ACR2 data centre, nearing completion, will serve as the primary access point for LINX Accra. Located strategically near six submarine cable landing stations, the new data centre is positioned to leverage Ghana’s strong international connectivity and play a vital role in improving the region’s digital infrastructure.

    Why it’s important

The launch of LINX Accra is poised to make a significant impact on the West African digital landscape. By providing scalable, low-latency solutions, the exchange is expected to bolster internet resilience and improve connectivity for service providers in the region. With the growing demand for robust internet infrastructure in Africa, the development will play a crucial role in enhancing access, resilience, and integration with global networks.

Joseph Koranteng, managing director of Digital Realty in Ghana, highlighted the importance of the collaboration, stating, “As demand for low-latency connectivity grows, this collaboration will help shape the region’s digital future.”
