  • Vodafone to acquire Telekom Romania’s post-paid customer base for $32 million
  • Digi Romania to purchase Telekom Romania’s pre-paid customer business

What happened: Vodafone and Digi strike deal to split Telekom Romania

Vodafone Romania and Digi Romania have reached separate binding agreements with Hellenic Telecommunications Organization (OTE) to acquire distinct parts of its Romanian subsidiary, Telekom Romania Mobile Communications. Under the terms of the deal, Vodafone Romania will acquire Telekom’s post-paid customer base for $32 million, which will be subject to typical closing adjustments. Digi Romania, on the other hand, will take control of Telekom Romania’s pre-paid customer segment.

Both companies will also benefit from additional spectrum and tower assets as part of the transaction, further enhancing their network infrastructure and competitive positioning in the Romanian market.

The completion of the deal is anticipated in early October 2025, marking a significant shift in the Romanian telecommunications landscape.

Why it’s important

This acquisition is a notable development for the Romanian telecom market, with Vodafone strengthening its foothold in the post-paid segment of the industry. The deal will not only expand Vodafone Romania’s customer base but will also bring with it critical network resources, further solidifying its competitive edge in the region.

For Digi Romania, the acquisition of Telekom’s pre-paid customer base aligns with the company’s strategy to widen its market share, especially in the increasingly important pre-paid segment. The additional spectrum and tower assets will provide both companies with enhanced infrastructure, enabling them to meet the growing demand for fast and reliable mobile services.

The timing of the transaction comes amidst increasing consolidation in the European telecom sector, as operators look to strengthen their offerings in an intensely competitive market.
