    Bowen University: Leading Research Innovation in Nigeria

    Institutional Overview

    In 2002, Bowen University launched learning activities with 506 students accepted in three faculties: science, agriculture, and social and management science. It has evolved over the years to offer an extensive selection of programs, including degrees in engineering, medicine, and law, through its seven colleges: College of Postgraduate Studies, College of Computing and Communication Studies, College of Health Sciences, College of Liberal Studies, College of Law, College of Agriculture, Engineering and Sciences, and College of Social and Management Sciences. As of April 2023, the university possessed concerning 4,751 undergraduates enrolled.

    Bowen University has generated research and innovation top of mind as a crucial component of its academic mission under under the leadership of Vice-Chancellor Professor Jonathan Oyebamiji Babalola. Research activities are made possible from the university’s well-equipped research spaces, libraries, and ICT resources. Notably, Bowen is home to a variety of research institutes which include the Center of Excellence for Environmental Studies, the Center of Excellence for Atmospheric Research, the Center for Biotechnology Research and Development, and the Center for Entrepreneurship Development and Vocational Studies.

    Research and Innovation Initiatives

    Most recent achievements at Bowen University highlight the school’s dedication to research. The university, and this came in third among private universities in Nigeria and thirteenth nationally, had been recognized as a leader in interdisciplinary science research in November 2024. This recognition illustrates the university’s loyalty to knowledge development and academic excellence. Professor Olatunde Samuel Dahunsi, an internationally recognized Harvard Radcliffe Fellow, has made significant improvements to sustainability. His studies on biorefinery solutions, and this was published in the highly regarded Woodhead Series in Bioenergy, deals with waste management problems with novel approaches including waste collection, bioenergy extraction, and biorefinery integration.

    Furthermore, Bowen University has forged strategic alliances to enhance its research capabilities. In June 2025, the university signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Nigerian Stored Products Research Institute (NSPRI) to drive innovations in agriculture and postharvest technologies.
