What happened: Vantage unveils mega AI data centre development in Texas

Vantage Data Centers plans to invest over $25 billion to build a 1,200-acre campus in Shackelford County, Texas. The project, named “Frontier,” aims to host ultra-high-density AI infrastructure. It will include ten data centres with capacity to support racks exceeding 250 kW. The campus will deliver 1.4 GW of power and is Vantage’s largest site globally. Construction has already begun, with the first building expected to open later next year. The venture is backed by private equity firm Silver Lake and asset manager DigitalBridge. It reflects growing demand for compute capabilities to run advanced AI models and large-scale cloud services.

    Why it’s important

This development points to how quickly demand for AI infrastructure is expanding across industry. A single served rack drawing over 250 kW emphasises the scale of computing and power requirements. Vantage’s plans respond to hyperscaler needs for connected high-performance clusters. The campus will require robust power, cooling and structured design to sustain AI workloads. Its massive scale may also shape how operators plan resource, energy and data centre strategy.

The project underscores the growing investment appetite for infrastructure aligned with industrial-scale AI. It signals how states such as Texas may become major AI compute hubs. As AI workloads grow in complexity, resilient regional infrastructure like this will underlie enterprise deployment.
