EMIS powers Angola’s interoperable payment infrastructure

    • EMIS operates the MULTICAIXA interbank ATM and POS network and five national clearing/payment systems in Angola.
    • It enhances financial inclusion through innovations like direct debit (SDD), instant transfers, and mobile-money advocacy.

EMIS underpins Angola’s digital payments system

Founded in 2001 by Angola’s central and commercial banks, EMIS runs the MULTICAIXA network: the only interbank ATM and point-of-sale (PoS) system in the country. It also manages essential clearing and payment systems—including the Automated Clearing House, Direct Debit (SDD), Credit Transfer, Cheque Clearing, and the instant Transfer System (STI). In 2023, EMIS partnered with Mastercard to launch a co-branded contactless card with EMV capability, signalling a shift towards modern digital payments and strengthening interoperability.

EMIS champions innovation and inclusion in payments

EMIS has introduced the Direct Debit System (SDD), simplifying recurring payments for utilities and other services. It also supports mobile money as a vital tool for financial inclusion—especially in rural areas—demonstrating commitment to broadening access to digital financial services. EMIS began migrating cash and card payments to EMV ‘Chip and PIN’ technology via a white-label solution (PURE) from Gemalto, bolstering transaction security and flexibility for merchants and banks.

Angola’s payment sector is evolving rapidly but faces structural issues: low digital penetration outside urban centres, high infrastructure costs, fragmented financial access, and security concerns. EMIS is navigating these by expanding reliable, interoperable systems and modernising infrastructure with contactless EMV, instant payments, and mobile wallet integration. This blended strategy supports financial innovation and inclusion across institutions, retailers, and individuals.

As Angola accelerates digital transformation, EMIS’s adaptable platform positions it at the heart of future economic growth. By balancing payment infrastructure with security and inclusion, EMIS is enabling secure, inclusive, and convenient financial access for more Angolans every day.
