What happened: VMO2 opens apprenticeship funding scheme to improve STEM access

Virgin Media O2 has launched an apprenticeship talent fund valued at £1 million. The initiative aims to help charities, small firms, social enterprises and local councils access unused apprenticeship levy funds to cover training costs. It prioritises inclusion, targeting women and individuals from global-majority backgrounds.

The scheme addresses financial and administrative hurdles that often prevent smaller organisations from offering apprenticeships. A company spokesperson explained that the fund will create long-term career opportunities and support local communities. A social mobility advocate and former apprentice also backed the scheme, citing its positive impact on her career.

    Why it’s important

The fund removes barriers to STEM apprenticeships for smaller employers and underrepresented groups. Full coverage of training costs encourages more inclusive workforce pipelines in tech and digital sectors.

This model may inspire other firms to unlock unused levy funds to aid skills development. It also reinforces the role of telecom operators in social mobility and local economic support. Greater inclusion strengthens long-term talent development and resilience across the sector. The initiative may also prompt broader industry participation in equitable apprenticeship funding.
