What happened: IAB shares detailed contributions for WSIS+20 elements paper

The Internet Architecture Board (IAB) has submitted its official stakeholder inputs to support the WSIS+20 review process. These contributions form part of the consultation on the UN’s twenty-year follow-up to the original World Summit on the Information Society. IAB structured its responses according to the multi-stakeholder model central to internet governance. Its inputs highlight themes such as technical coordination, security resilience, digital inclusion and trust frameworks.

The submitted document presents recommendations on long-term structural reforms including standardised protocols, open collaboration, accessible infrastructure and user privacy. IAB emphasises the role of open standards bodies, neutral policy forums and resilient architecture in shaping a sustainable internet. The comments seek to reinforce engagement with under-represented regions and support capacity building in emerging economies. IAB also called for stronger cooperation between technical and policy communities within the global governance ecosystem.

    Why it’s important

IAB’s input highlights the technical perspective in a broader governance process. Its proposals reinforce the importance of multi-stakeholder participation. They especially point to how infrastructure and protocols underpin digital rights and security standards. Wider adoption of IAB recommendations may increase interoperability across networks and help unify global technical policies. Its emphasis on inclusion helps ensure diverse regional voices inform regional and international deliberations. This may drive capacity building in underserved areas and improve trust in governance structures.

As WSIS+20 defines the next generation of digital policy goals, IAB’s submission provides clarity on the technical pillars required to support them. Stakeholders across civil society, governments and industry will use the input to guide implementation plans.
