Understanding AFRINIC’s role—and why this election meltdown matters

    • AFRINIC’s leadership crisis has undermined trust in its ability to manage Africa’s IP resources.
    • Cloud Innovation leads the charge for AFRINIC’s dissolution, seeking to reset Africa’s internet governance system.

The critical role of AFRINIC in Africa’s digital future

AFRINIC, as the regional internet registry (RIR) for Africa, manages essential internet resources like IP addresses. It is vital for Africa’s connectivity and digital growth. Without AFRINIC, the continent’s ability to build a resilient digital infrastructure is at risk.

However, AFRINIC’s credibility has been seriously undermined. The June 23, 2025 board election was annulled due to a proxy dispute. This decision invalidated hundreds of legitimate votes and exposed deep flaws in the organisation’s ability to run democratic elections.

The governance crisis and erosion of trust

AFRINIC’s repeated governance failures have eroded trust. Its inability to conduct fair elections has made it increasingly difficult for stakeholders to rely on the organisation. The cancellation of the 2025 elections further demonstrated that AFRINIC’s governance is unworkable. These governance issues have bigger implications. AFRINIC’s decline threatens Africa’s sovereignty over its digital future.

The call for reform: Cloud innovation leads the way

Cloud Innovation Ltd., AFRINIC’s third-largest member, is calling for change. They have demanded AFRINIC’s dissolution, citing its failure to effectively govern Africa’s IP resources. Their push for a new Regional Internet Registry (RIR) highlights their commitment to securing Africa’s digital future.

They have also called on ICANN and the NRO to immediately appoint a new RIR. This move aims to restore trust and ensure proper management of Africa’s internet resources.
