United RDC: Expands fibre network to bridge Congo’s digital divide

    • United RDC is investing in nationwide fibre to improve digital accessibility across urban and remote regions.
    • The company is adapting to local challenges through scalable infrastructure and government-backed public-private partnerships.

United RDC: Scaling fibre access in the DRC

United RDC is positioning itself as a key enabler of the Democratic Republic of Congo’s digital transformation. Founded in 2020, the telecom operator provides internet connectivity and managed services with a particular focus on fibre-optic infrastructure. The company aims to bring high-speed broadband to businesses and households across the country’s major urban centres and underserved areas. Through a combination of backbone fibre deployment, metropolitan networks and business connectivity packages, United RDC is addressing the gap in digital infrastructure that has long held back economic and social development in the DRC.

In a market plagued by limited fibre penetration and inconsistent service quality, United RDC’s rollout has been described as essential. Its efforts are underpinned by a commitment to affordability, local customer support and network resilience. According to its corporate overview, the company leverages partnerships with international backbones and national authorities to improve last-mile access while maintaining neutrality in interconnection. The firm also prioritises tailored solutions for government, enterprises and telecom operators, seeking to establish a more inclusive digital ecosystem.

United RDC: Responds to infrastructure and policy challenges

Operating in the DRC presents several hurdles, from regulatory uncertainty to geographic isolation and limited energy access. United RDC navigates these barriers through modular deployment models and collaboration with regional ISPs. The company actively works with provincial administrations to ensure the sustainability and reach of its services, often relying on public-private models to fund infrastructure. The lack of reliable terrestrial links has made the firm’s focus on fibre particularly significant, especially for high-demand users in sectors such as mining, banking and logistics.

Innovation remains a key theme in United RDC’s strategy. It is exploring ways to integrate cloud-based network management and automation to reduce downtime and optimise performance. As of 2024, the company has also begun offering Layer 2 and Layer 3 connectivity options to enhance flexibility for customers with complex IT requirements. With the Congolese government pushing for increased internet penetration, United RDC is expected to play a continued role in building the digital backbone of the country.
