What happened: AT&T activates 130MW solar deal in Texas

AT&T has finalised a long-term virtual Power Purchase Agreement (vPPA) with Canadian energy company Enbridge. The deal covers the entire 130MW output from the Orange Grove Solar project. The facility, located in Jim Wells County, Texas, went online on 4 June 2025.

The project marks Enbridge’s first solar installation in the state. It features approximately 300,000 solar panels spread across 920 acres. Power generated at the site is delivered into the ERCOT grid, which serves most of Texas.

AT&T will acquire all environmental attributes from the site. This supports its plan to reduce carbon emissions and manage energy costs. The agreement, signed in 2023, came into effect after the plant became operational this week.

    Why it’s important

This agreement reinforces AT&T’s goal to become carbon neutral across its operations by 2035. The telecom firm has steadily increased its investment in clean energy projects nationwide. These projects help it reduce Scope 1 and 2 emissions while locking in energy prices.

The Orange Grove project also signals Enbridge’s deeper entry into the solar sector. While best known for its gas pipelines, the firm is expanding into low-carbon technologies. It is also building the 815MW Sequoia Solar project near Abilene, Texas.

Despite these moves, Enbridge still relies heavily on fossil fuels. The company sees natural gas as essential for meeting rising data centre demand. VP Caitlin Tessin told DCD that gas remains the only scalable short-term solution. This reflects the energy challenges posed by digital infrastructure growth in the US.
