Jersey Telecom launches 5G standalone network

    • Jersey Telecom has begun rolling out its 5G standalone network, with initial sites now live.
    • The full deployment, in collaboration with Ericsson, aims to enhance connectivity across the Channel Islands by the end of 2025.

What happened: Jersey Telecom activates Channel Islands’ first standalone 5G network

Jersey Telecom (JT) has activated the first sites of its 5G standalone (SA) network, developed in collaboration with Ericsson. This rollout marks a significant technological milestone, making it the first 5G SA deployment in the Channel Islands. Unlike non-standalone 5G, which still relies on existing 4G infrastructure, standalone 5G is built on a dedicated 5G core. This allows it to deliver key benefits such as ultra-low latency, improved network slicing, and greater efficiency in handling large volumes of data traffic.

JT’s 5G SA network is designed to support a range of future-focused applications, including real-time communication, industrial automation, and smart city infrastructure. The technology is expected to unlock new possibilities for both consumers and enterprises by enabling faster, more reliable mobile experiences. The company stated that this upgrade would benefit local businesses, healthcare providers, and public services by offering better connectivity and more responsive services.

    Why it’s important

The launch positions Jersey as a leader in next-generation connectivity within the British Isles. The 5G SA network is designed to support future technologies and meet increasing data demands, benefiting both residents and businesses.
