    • EE and Ontix have deployed 80 small cells on lampposts across Westminster to boost 4G and 5G mobile coverage and capacity.
    • The initiative aims to improve connectivity in one of London’s busiest districts, benefiting residents, businesses, and tourists.

What happened: EE and Ontix boost 5G with small cells in central London

EE, in partnership with infrastructure provider Ontix, has deployed 80 small cells across Westminster, central London, to enhance 4G and 5G mobile coverage and capacity. These small cells are installed on existing street furniture, such as lampposts, and are painted to blend with the urban environment, minimising visual impact.

The deployment aims to address connectivity challenges in one of London’s busiest areas, which serves over 211,000 residents, 50,000 businesses, and attracts more than 25 million tourists annually.

    Why it’s important

This initiative is part of EE’s broader network densification strategy to improve mobile connectivity in high-demand urban areas. By utilising small cells, EE can provide enhanced network performance without the need for large, intrusive infrastructure.

The collaboration with Ontix and support from Westminster City Council demonstrate a successful model for public-private partnerships in upgrading digital infrastructure.
