    • Dhanda’s initiatives, including the Diversability Card and Asian Disability Network, address systemic inequalities faced by disabled communities.
    • Her advocacy underscores the importance of intersectionality in discussions about disability rights and representation.

From personal adversity to public advocacy

Shani Dhanda, a British disability rights activist, has become a prominent voice in advocating for inclusivity and challenging systemic barriers faced by disabled individuals, particularly those from minority backgrounds. Diagnosed with osteogenesis imperfecta, commonly known as brittle bone disease, Dhanda has firsthand experience with the physical and societal challenges associated with disability. Her early life was marked by numerous bone fractures and societal biases, including over 100 job rejections during her university years, which she attributes to discrimination against her disability.

In response to these challenges, Dhanda founded several initiatives aimed at promoting inclusivity and support for disabled communities. The Asian Disability Network provides a platform for support and advocacy within the Asian community, addressing cultural stigmas and promoting awareness. Additionally, Dhanda established the Asian Woman Festival, celebrating the achievements and identities of Asian women, including those with disabilities. Dhanda’s efforts have garnered significant recognition. She has been named among the UK’s most influential disabled people by the Shaw Trust Power List and was included in the BBC’s 100 Women list in 2020. Her work extends to collaborations with major corporations, including Virgin Media, where she has served as a disability program manager, advocating for inclusive practices within the corporate sector.

    Why it’s important

Dhanda’s activism highlights the multifaceted nature of discrimination, emphasizing how disability intersects with race, gender, and cultural identity. Her initiatives address not only the physical barriers faced by disabled individuals but also the societal and cultural stigmas that can exacerbate these challenges. By creating platforms like the Diversability Card and the Asian Disability Network, Dhanda provides tangible resources and support systems that empower disabled individuals. Her work encourages a shift in societal perceptions, promoting a more inclusive and equitable environment for all.

Furthermore, Dhanda’s collaborations with corporations demonstrate the importance of inclusive practices within the business sector. By advocating for accessibility and representation, she helps to ensure that disabled individuals are not only accommodated but also valued within the workforce. In a society where disabled individuals often face systemic barriers, Dhanda’s advocacy serves as a catalyst for change, inspiring both individuals and institutions to embrace inclusivity and challenge discriminatory practices.
