What happened: Opensignal’s UK broadband rankings release

Opensignal released its UK broadband performance report on 16 April 2025, based on user data over the prior 30 days, excluding persistent sub‑optimal router configurations. It divides connections into superfast (30–300 Mbps) and ultrafast (>300 Mbps) categories, as defined by Ofcom.

EE and Vodafone led all three superfast metrics—Consistent Quality, Reliability Experience and Video Experience. Plusnet tied for first in Consistent Quality in the superfast category. A four‑way tie for superfast Reliability Experience involved Vodafone, Plusnet, EE and Virgin Media. Superfast Video Experience winners were Virgin Media, Sky, Vodafone and EE. In the ultrafast tier, EE, Vodafone and Plusnet jointly led all three metrics, with TalkTalk joining them for Reliability Experience. Virgin Media and BT also shared top marks for ultrafast Consistent Quality. All seven ISPs tied in ultrafast Video Experience. Ultrafast households scored 853 in Reliability Experience, 120 points above superfast peers.

    Why it’s important

Opensignal’s findings guide consumers in choosing broadband plans based on real‑world performance. The data highlights the benefits of ultrafast connections for consistent and reliable use. ISPs can use these insights to target network improvements and customer experience enhancements. Regulators such as Ofcom can benchmark progress and identify under‑served areas. Streaming services and online gaming providers gain clarity on network capabilities. Clear performance metrics support investment decisions by businesses needing robust internet. Transparency in ranking fosters competition among providers, driving infrastructure upgrades. As demand for high‑speed broadband grows, reliable performance becomes critical. These rankings may influence future broadband funding and policy frameworks.
