    What happened

    Toyota Motor Corp, one of the world’s automaker, is planning to establish a new battery manufacturing plant in the southwestern Japanese prefecture of Fukuoka. This facility is set to produce batteries specifically for Toyota’s luxury Lexus vehicles, according to a report by Nikkei business daily published on Friday. The move marks a significant step in Toyota’s strategy to enhance its electric vehicle (EV) production capabilities and strengthen its supply chain for battery-powered vehicles.

    The Fukuoka plant will be strategically located on the island of Kyushu, a region Toyota aims to transform into a central hub for its EV battery supply chain and an export base for the broader Asian market. Although Toyota has acknowledged the report, a company spokesperson clarified that the plan has not yet been officially announced. The spokesperson also mentioned that Toyota is actively working on expanding its EV battery production capacity.

    The new battery facility will supply batteries to the Miyata plant, operated by Toyota Motor Kyushu, where Lexus vehicles are manufactured. This expansion is part of Toyota’s broader initiative to advance its EV production. The company has previously indicated that it plans to introduce EVs equipped with next-generation batteries globally from 2026, through its BEV Factory unit.
