SIDN Labs occupies an unusual position between academic inquiry and the live operation of the Netherlands’ `.nl` domain ecosystem. Its importance comes from converting registry, DNS, routing and time-service visibility into measurements, prototypes and standards work, while its limits come from the same institutional arrangement: the laboratory does not independently operate `.nl`, cannot turn a paper into production by declaration and remains dependent on SIDN’s finances, data access, engineering teams and public-interest priorities.
