    • Chinese autonomous driving car company WeRide is now one of the companies allowed by the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) to conduct passenger-carrying tests with its self-driving cars.
    • Its ability to manage regulatory risks related to quality issues may affect its US testing plan and international expansion plan.

    OUR TAKE
The company has been in operation since 2017 and has gradually expanded its influence in the unmanned vehicle industry. These innovative experiments mark an important step forward in the field of unmanned driving. This approach can not only help applicants improve their innovations, but also assist states in formulating regulations to better support innovators and existing airspace users. This ability is considered crucial for unleashing the full potential of unmanned driving technology in various fields..

    What happened

The Chinese autonomous driving vehicle company WeRide is now one of several companies that the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) has allowed to conduct manned tests of its driverless vehicles. Earlier this month, the company obtained a three-year license allowing it to transport passengers in driver-operated and driverless test vehicles in San Jose and surrounding areas. According to CPUC data, WeRide currently operates 12 active vehicles in California.

The company is allowed to test its vehicles, but it is stipulated that it neither provides rides to the public nor charges fares. This situation is typical for companies testing autonomous driving vehicles in California.

In this case, developments in California may provide insights into service performance and public acceptance, especially as WeRide is reportedly preparing to launch an IPO. In the next few months, we will observe whether the company’s passenger-carrying tests in California yield significant results. Therefore, its ability to manage regulatory risks related to quality issues may affect its US testing plans and international expansion plans.

    Why it’s important

During the test activities initiated by WeRide, it has become increasingly evident that its progress, safety record and the ability to navigate the US regulatory environment will attract great interest from various stakeholders. If these developments continue, they may have a significant impact on the implementation of autonomous vehicle strategies by international companies headquartered in the United States.

However, WeRide has made considerable progress in all aspects. Its innovative experiments mark an important step forward in the field of unmanned driving. The company has been in operation since 2017 and has gradually expanded its influence in the unmanned vehicle industry. In this case, it can not only help similar enterprises improve their innovations, but also assist states in formulating regulations to better support innovators and existing airspace users. This ability is considered crucial for unleashing the full potential of unmanned driving technology in various fields.
