NANOG 94 kicks off with focus on data‑centre operations

NANOG 94
  • Opening keynote on data‑centre growth and open‑source trends
  • Technical sessions cover BGP, security, automation

Day one highlights at NANOG 94 in Denver

The first day of NANOG 94, held on Monday 9 June 2025 at Sheraton Denver Downtown, began with registration and a newcomers’ breakfast. Jonathan Black, Executive Director of NANOG, officially opened the conference. He was joined by Chris Grundemann and Adair Thaxton. The keynote by John White from US Signal focused on “Data Centre Futures”, discussing scaling strategies and open‑source innovation.

Following the keynote, the morning included a primer on traffic engineering for AI/ML fabrics. Speakers from Juniper discussed deterministic BGP path forwarding and global load balancing. Later sessions featured detailed talks on pipeline security and router control‑plane divergence, including “A not so funny thing happened on the way to port 22” by Joel Jaeggli of Fastly

Attendees also joined a lively IPv6 clinic at lunch with whiteboarding and hands‑on labs for IPv6 VPC deployment. The first hackathon challenge launched at 10:15 am, giving participants opportunities to solve real‑world routing and automation problems.

First‑day themes set technical tone for conference

NANOG 94 opened with a clear emphasis on data‑centre design, BGP innovation, and network resilience. The inclusion of detailed traffic‑engineering and control‑plane anomaly talks shows industry focus on reliability. The IPv6 clinic demonstrated ongoing efforts to boost IPv6 adoption among operators. The hackathon further encouraged hands‑on learning and community collaboration.

These sessions reflect a broader shift towards automation and open‑source tools in network operations. They also support real‑world challenges in AI/ML deployments and secure routing practices. By addressing these topics, NANOG positions itself as a critical forum for sharing technical best practices. As the week continues, operators will likely build on today’s discussions to explore future networking trends and innovations.

LARUS, as a sponsor and attendee, plans to engage in discussions on IP address governance and network interconnection strategies later this week.
