- Ashesi University in Ghana was established in 2002 by Patrick Awuah with the goal of developing morally upright, enterprising leaders dedicated to social change.
- The university’s distinctive educational method is based on its guiding principles, which include citizenship, leadership, and scholarship.
A Vision Realised
Patrick Awuah left a bright future at Microsoft in 1997 to follow his dream of founding a Ghanaian institution that would encourage its students to think critically, lead ethically, and have an entrepreneurial spirit. After graduating from UC Berkeley with an MBA, Awuah went back to Ghana and established Ashesi University in 2002 with a trailblazing class of thirty students. The university is now a shining example of cutting-edge higher learning in Africa.

The Ashesi Way
“The Ashesi Way,” a collection of tenets that shape behavior and decision-making among university community members, is essential to Ashesi’s culture. These guidelines are:
- Scholarship: Promoting lifelong learning, critical thinking, and information exchange.
- Leadership: Encouraging self-motivation, clear communication, and the capacity to uplift and assist others.
- Citizenship: Promoting social and environmental responsibility, ethical conduct, and a commitment to leaving a positive impact.
These values are not merely theoretical; they are integrated into the daily lives of students and staff, shaping a community dedicated to making a difference.
Addressing Educational Challenges
Ashesi University is essential to closing the educational gap in a nation where less than 5% of college-age people seek higher education. By providing degree programs in fields like engineering, business administration, and computer science, Ashesi gives students the know-how to address Africa’s complicated problems. The university’s interdisciplinary approach guarantees that its graduates have the ethical foundation to lead with integrity in addition to being experts in their subjects.
Looking Ahead
Ashesi University’s influence goes beyond the classroom as it keeps expanding. A new generation of leaders committed to constructive change is inspired by the institution’s dedication to moral leadership and societal development, which is felt throughout Africa. Ashesi is well-positioned to make a substantial contribution to the growth and prosperity of the continent because of its solid basis and well-defined goal.
